Gems are the premium currency in Clash of Clans - the currency you are expected to dish out hard-earned cash in order to get more of them. You can use gems to speed up anything that’s timed really - as well as purchase a bunch of different items from the shop, recruit more builders, and much more. It’s a good currency to have - but what if you don’t want to spend actual money on gems?

Well, as it turns out, there are a lot of ways to actually earn this premium currency, for free within Clash of Clans.

Clear the land

When you have trees, rocks, etc on your land, you can pay coins to remove them. You are then rewarded with free gems in Clash of Clans! You can get up to 6 gems for clearing a bit of land, however, the number you get is predetermined. It follows a repeating pattern of: 6, 0, 4, 5, 1, 3, 2, 0, 0, 5, 1, 0, 3, 4, 0, 0, 5, 0, 1, 0. If you leave spaces on your land, plants will regrow (rocks will not) allowing you to continue clearing them and gaining even more free gems.

Complete achievements to get free gems in Clash of Clans

As you play the game, you will be working towards a bunch of achievements. You can achieve these by basically just playing the game, however, it is worth taking a look at your achievements and working towards them if you find yourself in need of some quick gems. Completing missions, unlocking troops, upgrading your village can earn you free gems in Clash of Clans, as long as you remember to go into your achievements and claim them! Achievements have three tiers to each one, meaning you have lots of chances to get gems!

Unlock gem mines

If you are looking for a passive way to gain gems, a gem mine is what you're after. You can unlock this extra camp by using the boat at the bottom of your initial village. This boat will bring you to PvP-first builder camp, where you can play matches against others in 1v1 combat, as well as upgrade units and build. You can remove the items here for free gems, but there is also a building that has been destroyed, called the Gem Mine. You can rebuild and upgrade this mine to then get gems over time - increasing the speed it takes to mine gems as well.

Sell your magic items

Chances are, if you are playing Clash of Clans, you are in an active clan and often take part in the Clan War Leagues. If your team is any good and able to win, you will be getting a higher League Medals tally, which you can use to get more potions and boons for your village. Though these may be useful for your village, you can also sell them, especially if you have too many. This is a choice you need to balance up, based on your needs, but if you do sell them, you will get small amounts of gems!

In-game events often reward you with some free gems!

Many of the events held in Clash of Clans give away rewards for doing challenges - sometimes they might offer straight gems as a reward, other times, magic items that can be sold. If you keep an eye on the events that are currently active, you might just find yourself new ways to unlock gems or to help you get that gem boost that you've been waiting for!
